Shoulder Pauldrons

An early armoring experiment, the purpose of which was to see if it were possible to make wide shoulder pauldrons which (a) weren't heavy enough to throw off one's balance while wearing them and (b) and which did not look as if they had been made out of cardboard. I explain all about how these was made in my Armormaking Tutorial so I won't say too much about them here, except to say it was an extremely challenging project. (Especially when you consider the fact that every single reference picture of the armor seemed to differ wildly in appearance from every other picture.)

Entire Costume
First Worn at Animazement 2004

I've made the pauldrons for this costume before, but this was my first crack at making the costume in its entirety. One of my friend's daughters is a big Slayers fan so for Animazement 2004 (which the both of us attended), I made her this costume. I had made the armor before so it wasn't too difficult to figure out. The shirt was a different story however, since it has a collar that juts up from the neckline without a seam. I used icy-blue satin to trim the shirt and I made the yellow bra thingy out of spandex.

The tights I made using a store-bought pattern, and the cape was semi-circular with a stand-up collar stiffened with buckram.

The gloves and the boots weren't too hard to alter, (although finding white boots that didn't look like hooker boots was more difficult than it should have been.)

The demon's blood talismans and belt gems were made by cutting plastic Christmas ornaments in half and gluing them into craft foam and plastic settings. Strips of elastic held the talismans around the wrists.

My friend's daughter was a natural model for this costume, as she had the perfect hair (and as you can see from the pictures, had Lina's attitude down PAT.)
