First Worn at Anime Detour 2006
Awards Won: Best Performance and Workmanship
One of my more ambitious armoring projects. I first started this costume by making the torso (which I shaped by using tagboard, taping it into a cylinder and then cutting out wedges and darting it to shape.) I based the rest of the pattern off of the size of the torso, to try to create as accurate a costume as possible. (I didn't want the armor to look "gorilla-y" with huge arms and short legs, so I built the shin armour around a pair of boots with 4" heels.) I wanted the chest of the costume to be wide enough to be proportional, so I had to create extensions for my hands which I wired so that the fingers would move. I made the head to be a separate piece which strapped above my own head (I was able to see where I was going through the grill at the top of the chest which is where my eye level was.)
The costume was, itself, massive and took 5 people to haul around. (Many thanks to Gabriel Moonshadow and the other members of my stage crew for helping me (a)wrangle the costume and (b)keep me from dying from exhaustion and/or panic backstage at the masquerade...)
